Thigh lift surgery
This website is intended to provide you with general information only. This information is not a substitute for advice from your Specialist Plastic Surgeon and does not contain all the known facts about this procedure.
Thigh lift surgery is a procedure that reshapes the thighs by reducing excess skin, and in some cases fat, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the thighs and lower body.
A thigh lift is designed to tighten the skin and improve the contour of the inner thigh. An incision is made either at the fold where the thigh and the groin join, or down the inner aspect of the thigh toward the knee.
Thigh lifts are not intended strictly for the removal of excess fat. Liposuction alone can remove excess fat deposits where skin has good elasticity and is able to naturally conform to new body contours. In cases where skin elasticity is poor, a combination of liposuction and thigh lift techniques may be recommended.
The procedure is an outpatient procedure, which takes up to 2-3 hours. You will be given general anesthesia or “twilight” sedation. Your cosmetic surgeon will make an incision at the junction of the inner thigh and the pubic area so that excess skin and fat can be removed and the remaining skin tightened. You will have two drainage tubes in place and these will be removed one to two weeks after surgery. These are needed to remove excess fluid that your body produces in response to surgery.
There are three options with regard to the thigh lift procedure that pertain to the incision location:
Circumferential Thigh Lift:
Incisions are made around the entire thigh to improve both inner and outer surfaces. This result is similar to that of a lower body lift (torsoplasty), which is intended to correct excess skin on the lower back, hips, upper buttocks and outer thighs. It has an increased recovery time due to the more extensive nature of the procedure.
Medial Thigh Lift:
This is generally only recommended for patients with very limited skin excess. An incision is made in the area where the leg and hip meet, which can allow for less visibility of scarring.
Vertical Thigh Lift:
This option consists of an incision along the inner thigh in order to excise the excess skin.
Am I a good candidate for Thigh Lift?
Thigh lift surgery may be a good option for you if:
- You are physically healthy and you do not have not have medical conditions that can impair healing or increase risk of surgery,
- Your weight is relatively stable,
- You have excess soft tissue along the inner or medial thigh region and/or the outer thigh,
- You are a non-smoker or have stopped smoking.
Overnight stay at the clinic is required 2 nights, which is already included in the price of your cosmetic surgery package.
Required minimum stay in Budapest 10 days after the surgery, recommended is 10-12 days after the surgery.
The plastic surgeon will prescribe pain medication for a few days after the procedure is done. You can expect to see minor swelling and bruising in the weeks after the procedure, which will disappear over a few weeks. You should consult with your surgeon about how long you will need to take off work; it is likely to be at least a week but will depend on the nature of your work. The cosmetic surgeon will advise you to refrain from strenuous activity, including running and other types of exercise, for 4-6 weeks.
You will have scars though the initial redness of the scars will begin to fade after 2-3 months, leaving much less visible white lines. Scars are generally well hidden by clothing. Therapies, such as laser, may minimize the visibility of scars.
